Flats were rampant on the runways for Spring 2014, a welcome relief for our feet from towering plaforms and teetering stilettos. And while the borrowed-from-the-boys oxfords, athletic-inspired sandals, and slides are seemingly easy to wear with skirts, pants, etc., the newcomer to the group, the ankle-strap flat, leaves some of us dumbfounded. Ankle-straps are historically hard to wear unless you have stems for days, as the strap can cut off your leg line. A high heel has been its saving grace, so what to do when the vamp is removed?
The runways of Narciso Rodriguez and DKNY showed two perfect ways to style the new flat. I’m choosing Alexander Wang’s glossy black version as the model. The trick for after-dark is to go a little higher with your hemline; an asymmetrical choice is chicer than a full-on mini. For the weekend, take your boyfriend jeans up a notch by rolling the hemline tightly right above the ankle to create a tapered leg on an otherwise relaxed fit. Comfort never looked so chic.
